Buying a Used Generator in the UAE: What to Check Before You Pay

A used generator is a smart buy if you check the data plate, running hours, fluids and performance under load before you pay. This guide walks you through the inspection step by step.

Buying a used generator in the UAE saves you a large part of the price of a new one — provided you inspect it before you pay, not after. Focus on five things: the original data plate, the running hours and service history, the condition of the fluids and the exhaust smoke, the generator's performance under a real load, and finally the control panel and the alternator. If a unit passes these checks, you are looking at a good deal.

Why do so many buyers choose a used generator?

An industrial generator is built to run for tens of thousands of hours when it is properly maintained, so "used" does not mean it is at the end of its life. Many of the units on the UAE market for generators for sale come from rental companies or finished projects, and some have run very few hours. The obvious advantages are a lower price and immediate delivery from stock; the risk is buying a unit whose maintenance was neglected. This guide reduces that risk.

Step 1: The data plate and serial numbers

The data plate is the generator's "ID card". It is usually on the alternator, with a second plate on the engine. Check:

  • Brand and model: for example Cummins, Perkins, Volvo Penta or Caterpillar.
  • Serial number of the engine and of the alternator, and the date of manufacture.
  • Rating in KVA and kW, and whether it is a Prime (continuous) or Standby rating. The standard rule: kW = KVA × 0.8.
  • Voltage and frequency: the UAE standard is 400/230 V at 50 Hz.

Numbers on the plate that match the numbers stamped on the engine itself are a sign of trust. A missing or scratched-off plate means you know neither the unit's age nor its origin. That is why our unit pages show photos of the original plates — for example the US-built Cummins 500 KVA generator, where the engine and alternator numbers and the manufacturing date are visible.

Step 2: Running hours and service history

The hour meter matters more than the year of manufacture: a ten-year-old standby generator with 500 hours is often a better buy than a three-year-old unit that ran day and night on a construction site. Ask about:

  1. The current hour-meter reading, and whether the control panel was ever replaced (a new panel sometimes resets the meter).
  2. Oil and filter change dates — the usual rule is every 250 running hours, or at least once a year.
  3. Any major repairs: an engine overhaul, alternator rewinding or a radiator replacement.

A unit with few, documented hours deserves your attention, such as the Volvo Penta 400 KVA generator with only 421 running hours.

Step 3: Check the fluids, smoke and sound

Inspect the engine cold first, then again after it has been running:

  • Engine oil: used oil is naturally dark, but milky or foamy oil points to coolant leaking into the oil — a serious fault.
  • Coolant: it should be clean, with no film of oil on the surface.
  • Smoke: a little black smoke for a few seconds at start-up or when load is added is normal. Continuous black smoke usually points to an injection fault or a blocked air filter; blue smoke means the engine is burning oil (rings or valves); heavy white smoke once the engine is warm can mean coolant is getting into the combustion chamber.
  • Sound and vibration: metallic knocking or uneven vibration is reason enough to ask for a deeper inspection.
  • Leaks: look under the base frame and around the joints after half an hour of running.

Step 4: The load test

A generator can look perfect running with no load, then fall short once it is loaded. The proper test is to run it on a real load, or on a load bank in steps (25%, then 50%, then 75%), and watch:

  • That the voltage stays within a narrow band — the job of the automatic voltage regulator (AVR).
  • That the frequency holds steady at 50 Hz without hunting.
  • Engine temperature and oil pressure on the control panel.

Step 5: Alternator, control panel and ATS

An alternator from a well-known brand such as Stamford, Leroy-Somer or Marelli makes spare parts easier to find later. Check the wiring insulation and make sure the windings are free of dust — industrial-area dust is the alternator's enemy. On the control panel, make sure the display works and shows alarms, and that the start, stop and emergency buttons are in good order. If the generator has an automatic transfer switch (ATS), which starts the generator and moves the load onto it automatically during a power cut, ask for a real power-cut test. One example of a complete unit with this equipment is the Perkins 100 KVA generator with a DeepSea panel and ATS.

Questions to ask the seller

  • Why is the unit being sold, and where was it running?
  • Is there a written service record or invoices for spare parts?
  • Can it be run in front of me on a real load?
  • What is included in the sale: batteries, fuel tank, ATS, cables?
  • Do you offer delivery, installation and after-sales maintenance?

Warning signs: walk away if you see

  • A missing data plate, or numbers that do not match the engine.
  • A broken hour meter, or one replaced with no explanation.
  • Milky oil, or continuous blue or white smoke.
  • Voltage that drops sharply when load is added.
  • A seller who refuses to run the unit in front of you.

The bottom line

A good used generator is not the cheapest one, but the one whose history you know: an original plate, documented hours, clean fluids and steady performance under load. At Halab Al Shahba in Sharjah you will find inspected used generators from 15 to 1500 KVA with real photos and original data plates. You can inspect any unit and see it running in our yard in the Industrial Area, with delivery and installation across the UAE.
